FAQs & Information
WHAT IS THE EVENT FOR?
We want all our gymnasts to have the chance to show off the skills they are working so hard on each week - we'd love to have more opportunities for family & friends to get to see what the club is all about, but unfortunately due to the layout of the venue it's only practical to do this for big occasions. We also want to create a bigger community feel to the club and get us all working together across all levels, so this is a perfect way to do that. Lastly, any funds raised as profit from the event will go towards upgrading the gym equipment & improving the venue facilities to make the club an even better place to come & be part of.
DO WE NEED TO TAKE PART?
Absolutely not - if your gymnast doesn't fancy it, don't worry! They'll still be able to come along to their classes each week and enjoy their gymnastics with us as normal. We'd encourage anyone who isn't sure about it to register initially to take part and work towards it first, then if they change their mind we can withdraw them if you let us know before the entry deadline passes. We promise it'll be laid-back and friendly for everyone involved, but totally get that there are some who won't want to do it - you're still welcome to come along, watch, cheer on your classmates & take part in the rest of the fun instead!
WHAT DO GYMNASTS DO AT THE EVENT?
Our Stage 1, 2, Boys Gymnastics and Floor & Vault gymnasts will compete two routines - one on Floor, the other on Vault.
Stage 3, 4, Preparation & Artistic gymnasts will compete a routine on Floor, Vault, Beam & Bars.
All gymnasts will register on arrival, go through a general warmup, march in, practice their routines in the competition hall, then perform them for the judges.
WHEN WILL MY GYMNAST'S COMPETITION TAKE PLACE?
Saturday 31st Aug: Stage 3, Stage 4, Preparation and Artistic competitions
Sunday 1st Sept: Stage 1, Stage 2, Boys Gymnastics and Floor & Vault competitions
Due to the number of people expected to take part, the likelihood is that competitions for some levels may take place over the course of several rounds. This ensures that all gymnasts are judged by the same people & standards, so it's fair for all. This means that for example, the Stage 1 competition may begin in Round 1 on Sunday but presentations for the overall winners may not take place until the end of Round 2, when all the gymnasts of the same age from across Stage 1 are finished. Wherever possible, we'll make sure competitions are kept within the same round, or as close together as possible on the day.
The detailed timetable can only be confirmed once all entries have closed - we will send out a programme to everyone participating as soon as this is sorted.
ARE REGULAR CLASSES CANCELLED ON THE EVENT WEEKEND?
Yes, all of our normal timetable will be cancelled from Fri 30th Aug - Mon 2nd Sept to accommodate the event.
WHAT SHOULD THEY WEAR?
Nothing special is required - they can take part in what they normally come to gymnastics in: t-shirts, shorts, leggings, leotards.
If you have any club kit, we'd love to see you in that on the day - but you're just as welcome to wear your own favourite leotard or top if you'd like to. Please do make sure they have any long hair securely tied up and all jewellery removed.
WHO CAN WATCH?
Anyone! We'd be delighted for any friends or family to come along and see what the gymnasts have learned at the club. We will have a limited number of seats available per round, due to space constraints in the venue, so please look out for ticket info closer to the time.
HOW ARE ROUTINES JUDGED?
All routines are judged based on Execution (E Score) - how well the skills presented are performed. There are general deductions for things like bent legs, incorrect shapes and body positions, steps on landings, etc. There are also specific deductions for things like falls, incomplete moves, etc. The judges watch each routine closely for these errors and take marks away from a starting score of 10.00. When the routine is complete, the Difficulty Score (DV) of the routine is then added to the E Score to produce the final score.
WHAT PRESENTATIONS WILL TAKE PLACE?
The top 3 placed gymnasts will receive medals, with 4th, 5th & 6th place awarded rosettes. Special recognition awards will also be made for best execution, highest difficulty, artistry and judges' choice. All competitors will receive a certificate and memento for taking part. Presentations take place once all gymnasts at the same level have finished their competition - if a level has so many entries that they need to run over multiple rounds, this means the awards will be presented after the final round involving those gymnasts, not after the first one.
WHO COMPETES AGAINST EACH OTHER?
Each level of our recreational event will be split into age categories so that everyone is competing against their peers within the same ability range. For our competitive groups, there will be an Open competition for all ages within a level, and a Closed competition for gymnasts within the same squads.
IF A GYMNAST DOES WELL, WILL THEY BE MOVED TO A COMPETITIVE GROUP?
Possibly, but not necessarily - we are always looking for sparks of potential, and we might see some new ones at the event which show the coaching team a gymnast is ready for a move to a higher level or a competitive group, but our event will be geared towards being fun & inclusive for everyone so there may still be elements that even a medal-winning gymnast needs to work on to progress to that level.
